This Sunday is the Global Work Party organized by Bill McKibben’s organization 350.org.
There are 6,846 events organized in 188 countries as of Oct 7 at 4:00 pm Mountain Time. If you like you can organize your own or join in an event already planned. Check here to see what is planned close by or if you want to organize your own register it here.
Here are some ideas for events from the 350.org web site and some of my own:
Organize a Tree Planting
Go Solar
Work on a Community Garden or Organic Farm-or you could Start your Own Garden
Go for a bike ride instead of taking your car
Make a commitment to go meat free one day a week if you are a daily meat eater, and start Sunday
There are so many ways to make a difference. 350.org’s mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.
Part of the idea is to show world leaders that the citizens of the world are ready to take action, and that they need to act too. This years event is being launched by President Nasheed of the Maldives, one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, when he completes the installation of solar panels on the Presidential home.
Last years event involved 5,200 events world wide and this year there could be over 7,000 events so the good news is this is a fast growing movement.
The number 350 represents the the parts per million (ppm) of CO2 in the atmosphere that is the safe limit for humanity and will bring climate change under control. We currently are at 390 ppm, so there is a lot of work to do…but it is possible, especially when we all join together. To learn more here are some FAQ’s about what this means.
I will be out of town on 10/10/10 and I will attend an event where I will be-what a wonderful way to meet people in a different city. Join in the fun and let our leaders know that we are serious about finding solutions for climate change and it’s time for them to get serious too.
